The Way We Were In 1968: the great push for contraception

For people who don't realize how it was way back in the 60's when those of us who were young, married and fertile, this candid article is an amazing description of why we didn't put much, if any, stock in the prophetic words of Pope Paul VI in his apostolic letter Humanae Vitae  (of Human Life).

For those of us who fell prey to the times, colored by outright dissent among some clergy and theologians and Catholic-educated lay men and women, this is good news in that in light of ignorance of what the Church really said, we may have reduced culpability for actions that resulted in our choosing birth control almost automatically in those odd, confusing days.

But what was understandable and even sometimes almost innocent back then is not beyond our grasp to understand now. Nor is it morally right for us to remain in ignorance and/or to refuse to learn the truth. Once knowing, then, we have the grave responsibility to pass it on to our own young. If we don't, we are culpable.

It is never too late to seek God's great mercy, but pride does go before the fall, and in these days, it could well be the fall of our own nation if we fail to rise to the present occasion to rethink our views, to repent where necessary, to seek healing, and to help others to avoid our same mistakes.
