As Pope Benedict calls for prayer for ‘nascent’ human life on November 27, 2010, Leaven for Humanae Vitae, a pro-life Catholic apostolate, announces a social action initiative for ‘nascent’ traditional family life through the family of Tony and Ann Crowe, who moved from Northern Ireland south just over a year ago, right before unemployment rates skyrocketed to near 17%. The move only increased their inability to find suitable employment., and a request to The Leaven for help came soon after Tony Crowe gave his own testimony about negative side effects of contraception on EWTN.
With a family of eight children in Ireland‘s troubled economy, the potential emergence of this young developing family is at risk of long term crippling poverty.
The Davises urge the community to be a leaven for the Crowes by helping them to start a small organic produce business near an area that boasts a high volume of tourism. Crowe has training in horticulture, but he still lacks the means to actually start the business. “It’s hard to funnel off funds for such an undertaking when you‘re already in the red during hard times,” says Leaven founder Alton Davis, who speaks from firsthand experience of losing everything in the Recession of the Eighties in the U.S. when he and wife Juliana had five young children to support. “With just a few thousand dollars, they could make a good start that could make all the difference for them,” says Davis.
The Crowes stand against cultural trends against nascent life that have resulted in over 50 million surgical abortions per year in the United States and hundreds of millions of “silent” abortions through birth control chemicals and devices. Since the advent of the Pill, it is increasingly the traditional family that is often subtly and sometimes not so subtly held in disdain, even among some Christians. “This mood is against the common good, since the progeny of couples generous to life can be leaven in the world as future teachers, physicians, laborers, merchants, poets, and ministers to have dominion over the earth and to subdue it.”
